What is CGPA & how is it calculated?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects in a programme, reported on a 10-point scale by most Indian universities. It is calculated by dividing the sum of (credits × grade points) by the total credits attempted.
How to calculate CGPA in 4 steps
- 1List every subjectwith its credit value (usually 1–5 credits each).
- 2Convert grades to grade pointsO = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5.
- 3Multiply credits by grade pointsfor each subject to get its credit points.
- 4Divide total credit points by total creditsrounded to two decimals — that's your CGPA.
The CGPA formula
Worked example — credits 4, 3, 3 with grades 9, 8, 7: (4×9 + 3×8 + 3×7) ÷ 10 = 8.10 CGPA.
