The basics

What is CGPA & how is it calculated?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects in a programme, reported on a 10-point scale by most Indian universities. It is calculated by dividing the sum of (credits × grade points) by the total credits attempted.

How to calculate CGPA in 4 steps

  1. 1
    List every subject
    with its credit value (usually 1–5 credits each).
  2. 2
    Convert grades to grade points
    O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5.
  3. 3
    Multiply credits by grade points
    for each subject to get its credit points.
  4. 4
    Divide total credit points by total credits
    rounded to two decimals — that's your CGPA.

The CGPA formula

CGPA = Σ (Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Σ (Credits)

Worked example — credits 4, 3, 3 with grades 9, 8, 7: (4×9 + 3×8 + 3×7) ÷ 10 = 8.10 CGPA.
